JK Rowling did this and it pissed off a lot of Native Americans, not only Navajos. I only really get offended when someone deliberately changes it and they have a large following. The Navajos who believe in and fight the Skinwalkers will continue to do so and won't be bothered by whatever pop culture does with it. I think due to today's secular society it just makes the traditional Navajo even more of an outsider but at the same time it distinguishes us from the average American. I asked my grandparents this same question once and they said, "Well good it keeps the white people away from those horrible things." (things referencing the dark ways they follow). Many things said about them are to be kept within the tribe and only extensively talked among the medicine people. For many Navajos like myself Skinwalkers are a reality we have to deal with. In a way it is good that there is so much misinformation since it distracts people from learning more about them. I know this isn't the first time an element of Navajo culture has been misinterpreted or bastardized in some way.Īnyways, I would be interested to have some perspective from Navajo people on this subject. But I thought, "maybe Navajo people see this totally differently." So that's what I'm here to ask about. Because for a while, it's been bothering me. I just wanted to know if this rubs some Navajo people the wrong way. But the internet seems to have a completely warped understanding of these witches of legend. They are people who are practicing a deeply wicked form of magic. ![]() I'm no expert myself, but I know enough about the legends to know that skinwalkers aren't just some demonic, alien entity. And they say "that's gotta be a skinwalker!" I'll be a strange animal noise, or a guy hiding behind a bush wearing some demonic looking costume. #skinwalker showing up all over spooky YouTube and TikTok videos by the hundreds of thousands.
